Moroccan Towns

May 2018

Former home of Yves Saint Laurent; now a museum.

Morocco's largest Jewish cemetery.

They show me the neighborhood and then the taller says to the smaller: "Ask for 5 dirhams" (the local currency).  I offer 10.  She immediately counters with 20.

Pic taken by a barber before giving me a straight-razor shave. (Excuse the hiking shirt.)

Writers' favorite tropes to describe a culture or country: it mixes the modern and traditional; and it possesses contradictory traits making it paradoxical and enigmatic.  Runner-up: it's a bridge between two larger regions/cultures.

Effective soft power.  A free U.S. vet facility for pack animals. And on the wall: "Fear god in your pack animals, do not hurt them or load them more than they are able to bear. -prophet Mohamed".

Poppies, agave, olive trees.

What this arch lacks in assurance it makes up for in instruction. It doesn't inspire confidence, but it clearly demonstrates how it works.

Itinerary: Two weeks' solo travel in Marrakech, Meknes, Fez, Moulay Idriss and the Roman ruins of Volubilis.
