The famous rock-hewn churches in the town of Lalibela are carved out of solid rock in the hill side. About 2/3 of Ethiopians are Christian Orthodox or Protestant; most of the rest are Muslim.

Itinerary: 6 weeks of solo travel (except for 1 week traveling to remote tribes with 2 others and a hired jeep/driver): 

- Addis Ababa;
- the Great Rift Valley;
- 6 tribal villages in the Southern Omo Valley (tribes: Dorze, Konso, Mursi, Ari, Karo and Hamer);
- Lake Tana and its monasteries;
- Simien Mountains (10 days of trekking); and
- the historic towns of Gondar, Aksum, Lalibela and Harar.
