Hiking Morocco:
The Atlas Mountains

April - May 2018

Sahara Desert on the horizon.

It was a very heavy snow year so I had to change my route and rent crampons and ice axe.

Summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,200 m. (13,700 ft).  The highest point in North Africa "and the Arab World" (although almost no Arabs live in the Atlas, only Berbers).

Every village, no matter how small or remote, had a well-built mosque broadcasting the 5 daily calls to prayer.  Several villagers assured me all males "with hair under their arms" attend the first call, which is always before sunrise.

Millet meets impressionism?  Not sure how I did this.

I stayed two nights in villages with Berber families providing good meals and small dorms.

Many goats, pens and shepherd huts.

Irrigation channels everywhere.

"06" on the little gate.  Every village family has allotted gates and times for watering their fields.

I hiked out to a big village with asphalt access and tourist-trap waterfalls.  Hate to use the cliche, but it was so bad it was good (not shown: pool tables, shoe sales, a shooting gallery...).

Wildlife seen: Two fox, lizards, vultures, kites, trout.

Itinerary: 10 days of solo hiking 110 km (70 miles) on the "Toubkal Circuit" and an additional hike to Setti Fatma village.  Highest point was 4,200 m. (13,700 ft).
